Chipotle

Review for 05/05/06

Chipotle Mexican Grill
306 So. 9th Street Columbia, MO 65201

The best burrito I have ever eaten. The Chicken Fajita Burrito is to die for. I actually knocked over four college students just to get in line at the Columbia, MO restaurant. So good, I ate two of the "big as my daughter's head" burritos. Worth the nearly 2 hour drive to Columbia.

Stir Crazy

Creve Coeur, MO 63141 314-569-9300

Watch the food fly in and out of the cook's wok. You pick it, they make it. A buffet of fresh vegetables and sauces... how can it not be good if you pick it. We usually get the Pick our own Stir Fry and a few appetizers. Great service and atmosphere. Cool place for a date or for hanging out with friends.

Nachomama's

Nachomama's Tex Mex
39643 Manchester in Rock Hill, MO Tel: 314-961-9110
One of the more authentic Mexican Restaurants in St. Louis. From chalupas to Tamales, chicken or beef, their menu has it all. Our favorite is the Chicken Fajita Soft Tacos. The chips are good with even better sauces available, if your brave enough try the Fire sauce. Everything is prepared fresh and you know it when you look over the cashier’s shoulder and see the crates of tomatoes and green peppers stacked high. Consistently satisfying! Check out the chalkboard for daily specials.

Penn Station

Penn Station
multiple locations (we visited - 9800 Manchester Road Rock Hill, MO 63119 (314) 962-0005)
As close to Philadelphia you can get without buying a plane ticket. Seriously, their “Original” loaded with steak, provolone, sautéed onions, and mayo (minus the mushrooms for me) was eerily close the sandwich I had in Philadelphia ten years ago. I thought about that sandwich for months after returning to St. Louis. Very good sandwiches, but the wait could be long at lunchtime.

Cecil Whittaker

Cecil Whittaker Pizzeria
many locations (our favorite; 15338 Manchester Rd. in Ballwin)
Not all locations are equal, but if you find a location that takes their customers seriously (like our favorite at 15338 Manchester Rd. in Ballwin, then you won’t be disappointed. The pizza (hamburger and green pepper) was very good and the wings are in the top five of St. Louis. They also have a very good baked Mostaccioli and garlic bread. Kid friendly and surprisingly good with great coupon specials.

Imo's

A St. Louis institution! The thin crust pizza with the square slices IS hard to compare. What makes the pizza different besides the wafer thin square slices, perhaps the Provel cheese, fresh ingredients and a zesty tomato sauce. They also, serve salads, sandwiches, and appetizers such as toasted ravioli and hot wings. An ideal choice for lunch or carryout.

Charleys

Review for 3/24/06

Charley's Grilled Subs
The Galleria Mall and five other mall locations
A good place for a quick meal to energize your shopping expedition. The California Chicken sandwich is so far the best. Grilled chicken slices on oven-baked bread, topped with lettuce, tomato and a special white sauce. Very good french fries. Don't be afraid to stop and sample.

Frazers

Review for 2/17/06

Frazer's
1811 Pestalozzi in Benton Park (across I-55 from the brewery) Tel: 314-733-8646
Consistently "Five Star" in our book, great atmosphere and even better service. Frazer's is a great place for a date or dinner out with friends. There is a daily changing menu that features steaks, a variety of fresh seafood dishes, pasta, sandwiches, soups, and salads. Our personal favorite is the Shrimp and Scallop Sauté which consists of sea scallops and shrimp sautéed in butter with fresh tomato, garlic, capers, and white wine. Served with steamed rice and chilled poached green beans tossed with red wine vinaigrette, plus a Caesar Salad. Don't leave before you get a delicious homemade deserts.

The #4. Turkey Tom which has alfalfa sprouts, lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonaise on french bread. Cheese upon request. The french bread maybe the best I have had on a sandwich in a long time. My spot must be fine, since it hit the spot! (inside joke in regards to one of their signs). Good price for the sandwich.

Great Burritos. Good Atmosphere. Good place for lunch. Chicken Fajita Classica Burrito is our favorite burrito.

Ameristar

Landmark Buffet
Ameristar Casino 1260 Main Street St. Charles, MO 63301 Tel: 636-940-4470
Strap on the feedbag! This buffet may give you an anxiety attack cause you won’t know where to start. Whether you're in the mood for crab legs and shrimp, an Italian dish, or a build-your-own stir-fried dish from the authentic Mongolian grill, your mood will be satisfied. I have never eaten so much in one sitting and that was before desert.

Carondelet Grill

Review for 1/20/06

Carondelet Grill
8000 Carondelet Clayton, MO 63105 Tel: 314-721-7001
Great place for a business lunch or if you work in Clayton, you can easily grab some take out before you head home. The hamburger and fries were good; the hot wings were even better. They have multiple TVs along with two flat screens behind the bar, which makes for a good place to watch the game.

P.F. Chang

P.F. Chang
1295 Chesterfield Parkway East Chesterfield, MO 63017
The menu features traditional Chinese offerings and innovative dishes with an influence of Southeast Asia on modern Chinese cuisine. Their chefs use Mandarin style wok cooking to prepare your dish. We started with the Salt & Pepper Calamari (Calamari tossed with scallions, Kosher salt and coarse black pepper) which was very good, then finished with Kung Pao Chicken with peanuts, chili peppers and scallions (no vegetables?!) and the Orange Peel Chicken. Satisfying but not outstanding, but the atmosphere makes up for it.

Hacienda

Review for 11/8/05

Hacienda
9748 Manchester Rd. St. Louis, MO 63119 Tel: 314-962-7100
A Tex-Mex/Southwestern/Mexican style restaurant located in Rock Hill. Probably the best chips and salsa in St. Louis. They have a great patio area, which makes for a perfect happy hour location. The usual suspects are on the menu from flautas, nachos and enchiladas. We prefer the Wet Burrito; stuffed with frijoles and seasoned beef, topped with chile ancho sauce, melted jack and cheddar, shredded lettuce, diced onion etc. If you are looking for something different, try the Crab Meat Enchilada Dinner.

Yoshi

Review for 11/1/05

Yoshi
1637 Clarkson Rd. Chesterfield, MO Tel: 636-536-7778
First, I must say the service was wonderful and pleasant. They have the usual entrée and appetizers choices. But, we believe their Sushi is their strength. The Spicy Tuna Roll, Shrimp Tempura, White Tuna and California rolls are fantastic. The signature Yoshi Roll, can be described as “delicious and different”, with salmon and cream cheese and asparagus and avocado inside. Need an appetizer, try the Edamame. Don’t forget to wash down your meal with the usual choices of Japanese beer plus hot or cold sake. One of the best in St. Louis!

Blueberry Hill

Review for 10/11/05

Blueberry Hill
6504 Delmar Blvd. University City, MO Tel: 314-727-4444
One of the best hamburgers in St. Louis. Don’t believe me; believe the many reader polls sponsored by the local newspapers that have placed Blueberry Hill in the top ten in many categories, such as best burger, best onion rings, and even best décor. The restaurant offers the typical pub fare like hamburgers, fries, and nachos and of course, toasted ravioli and mozzarella sticks. As for the beverage selection, you won’t be disappointed by the wide selection of imported and domestic beers. Located in University City, this bar is definitely St. Louis landmark.

SouthCityDiner

Review for 9/6/04

South City Diner
3141 S. Grand Blvd. just south of Tower Grove Park Tel: 314-772-6100
This diner is known for its South City Meatloaf Supreme and hand dipped shakes, as well as its breakfast menu. Try the Build Your Own Omelet and have your choice of sausage, mushroom, bacon, peppers, onions, tomatoes, spinach, diced ham, or a second cheese as the ingredients. Don't forget about the Biscuits & Gravy, delicious just like my grandma used to make. They have an extensive menu that can satisfy everyone in the family. Great atmosphere and even better service makes this diner a must go.

My first thought was, "What! No Kung Pao Chicken?" A very quiet atmosphere when I was there for lunch. Disappointed that there was no Kung Pao dish, but tried the Garlic Chicken which was good. Egg roll was okay. Pricey for lunch. It didn't grab me by the neck to tell me to come back.

Helen Fitzgerald's

Review for 8/2/04

Helen Fitzgeralds
3650 South Lindbergh Blvd. Sunset Hills, Mo 63127 (314) 984-002
Lunch consisted of Syberg's Famous Chicken Wings. I then moved on to the Old Fashion Cheesburger. 3/4 lb of meat with pepper cheese and french fries. Did I mention the salad? A mixture of iceberg and romaine lettuce with sliced red onions, diced red peppers, croutons, shredded provel cheese with the house dressing. Let's just say Daddy was very happy after this meal and needed a nap. Great place to watch a game on their many TVs.

Panda Express

Review for 7/26/04

Panda Express
Galleria, Chesterfield Mall, Crestwood Mall, and Union Station
For a quick lunch, think of Panda Express. You don't think of Asian cuisine being as good as this when it is served so quickly. This Chinese restaurant has an excellent Kung Pao Chicken. Served with a fried rice, I get a double helping of the Kung Pao to complete my 2-entree plate. Great lunch for a great price!

Excellent! The best authentic Mexican food I have had in St. Louis. In fact, the best authentic Mexican food I have eaten, even while I was living in Los Angeles. We had the Enchiladas Verdes with Chicken...delicious and Tostada Plate which was Yummy! Service has always been great in my many visits.
