Review: Life and death are at
the core of this story of Spanish women. Raimunda (Penelope Cruz)
has a difficult life. Married to a rotter named Paco who offers nothing
but pain to the household, she struggles to make a decent home for
herself and her daughter. Sole, Raimunda’s sister, runs an illicit
beauty salon in her apartment and barely makes ends meet.
The two sisters are linked by a devotion to their elderly aunt,
their dead mother’s sister, who depends on them for companionship.
And it is the passing of that aunt that changes their lives forever.
But this is not a tender story of family ties and devotion; rather
it is a tale of crime, mystery and intrigue directed by the Spanish
master, Pedro Almodovar. Be prepared to feel part of a violent,
troublesome and sometimes humorous crime cover-up and some sharp
twists of plot. Remember, “volver” means “to return.”
