Review: An amusing animated (CGI)
“mocu-mentary” based on the premise that penguins were
the original surfers. Featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the in’s
and out’s of the Big Z Memorial Surf-Off competition, the film
crew gets close up and personal with surfing new-comer, Cody Maverick
(Shia LaBeouf) and reveals his close relationship to the greatest
surfer of all times, Big Z (Jeff Bridges).
Amazing scenes of penguin surfing prowess dot the film’s action.
“Hang Six” is the cry of the crowd as the contenders show
off all of their best moves. And the surfing is topnotch, including
that of an unlikely competitor, a crazy surfing chicken (Jon Heder),
who turns out to offer comic relief to the tense, competitive mood
of the meet.
From the same directors (Ash Brannon; Chris Buck) who brought you
“Toy Story 2” and” Tarzan, comes this children’s
film that has enough substance and sight gags to hold the attention
of both children and the adults in tow.
