Review: By happenstance, two college
roommates meet decades later, but it’s not a typical, happy
reunion. Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle) is a successful, upscale dentist
and family man, and Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler) is a lost soul.
Not currently practicing dentistry, Charlie suffered the loss of his
wife and children in the 9/11 attack on New York City and has never
recovered from his shock and loss. His sorrow has crafted him into
an unkempt recluse who spends his days in an apartment playing the
same video game over and over and his nights riding the streets of
NYC alone on his small mo-ped. Music seems to be his only connection
to the joy that his life once held.
Although Charlie’s problems are more profound, Alan has his
own life-crisis going on. Feeling trapped in his profession and smothered
by his wife’s dominance of their social life, he needs a pal
of his own. Charlie becomes his pal as well as his personal project,
as the two muddle through being friends again.
Drama is not Sandler’s usual path, but he does an excellent,
sensitive job of portraying a man devastated by the loss of his family
and gives a convincing picture of the lengths that a person will go
to in order to avoid a troubling reality. Director Mike Binder has
a hit on his hands.
