Review: A period drama set in 18th century France, this is a tale of a rag-tag savant with a talent for intricate scents and murder most foul. This strange but intriguing combination will hold your attention for the duration, a run-time of 2 hours and 25 minutes.

Driven by a strange obsession to experience and capture all scents, Grenouille (Ben Whishaw) collects and laboriously extracts the essences of all that surround him. After securing a position with a famous perfume maker (Dustin Hoffman), he becomes increasingly possessed with bottling “the ultimate scent.”

Beautifully shot, and strangely addictive, this film of scent is an equally interesting treat for the eyes. An adaptation of a best-selling novel by Peter Suskind, “Perfume” has much to offer the sophisticated film-goer. Director Tom Tykwer has designed a piece so intriguing that the repulsive becomes art.

Be advised of the R rating. In my opinion, it is a very hard R and definitely not for children.
