Review: Amid the hustle and bustle
of planning their celebrity wedding, Reed (Ioan Gruffudd) and Sue
(Jessica Alba) get called into service by the military. It seems that
very strange climatic changes are occurring all over the planet, and
no one has a clue what is behind the situation. Much to Sue’s
dismay, her wedding to Mr. Fantastic will just have to wait while
the Fantastic Four team up to save the Earth from disaster.
Can Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben save the Earth from destruction at
the hands of Galactic and his henchman, the Silver Surfer? And how
does the evil Dr. Doom figure into the plan? Comic book fans around
the universe are waiting for the answers. And fortunately for those
fans, this 2007 saga is far better than the 2005 offering. The effects,
especially at the end are riveting, as the end of our world looms
over the audience.
Of course it’s not all gloom and doom. As the movie begins,
Reed (Ioan Gruffudd) and Sue Storm (Jessica Alba) are busily planning
their high-profile, media- blitzed wedding. Of course it’s
no time at all before the wedding is put on the backburner and they
are called to duty as the stretchy, Mr. Fantastic and the allusive
Invisible Woman. Along with their pals, the Human Torch (Sue’s
brother) and The (Rocky) Thing, the molecularly enhanced team rallies
to the cause.
Enter the film’s namesake, the Silver Surfer (voiced by Laurence
Fishburne and embodied by Doug Jones), said to be made of nitrogen,
but looking very much like a glob of well-defined mercury, who travels
the globe disrupting the climate. Don’t expect great dialogue,
most of the chatter is quite shallow and the characters, pretty
stiff. But do expect to be entertained by a comic book team of super
heroes who somehow manage to reason with the Surfer and fight the
good fight as they attempt to save the Earth from the super-enemy
of all planets, Galactus.
Director Tim Story kept the running time at a short 90 minutes.
That, and the PG rating, should draw an audience from a wide demographic.
And, by the way, we get to peek under the drape and see Reed’s
latest invention, The Fantasticar.
