Review: The place is Sierra Leone,
Africa, and the times are turbulent. Civil war and the brutalities
that follow are wreaking havoc on the citizenry. This is the story
of one of those citizens, a fisherman, Soloman Vandy (Djimon Hounsou),
who gets caught up in all of the ugliness that is War. Taken prisoner
by rebels, he is forced to work in the diamond mines, and dig for
the stones that ultimately finance the bloodshed. Imprisoned, Soloman
meets a soldier-of-fortune who trades in smuggled diamonds, Danny
Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio). Each man has his own agenda and each needs
the other to survive.
Next time you take a stroll through the mall and peek at a jewelry
store display, your thoughts may stray to this brutal tale of the
“blood diamond” industry. Often referred to as conflict
diamonds, these stones so desired by the Haves, may be stained with
the blood of the Have-Nots, at least according to director Edward
Zwick.
