Review: A would be astronaut,
Charles Farmer (Billy Bob Thornton), chooses the family farm over
a trip in space with NASA, and lives his life regretting his choice.
Married with two children, he spends almost every waking hour working
on building a rocket in his barn. And not just any kind of rocket,
but a vehicle capable of taking him out of this world’s atmosphere
and into orbit above Earth.
That project, and his obsession with it, earns him the reputation
as town oddball. When the government finds out about the project,
things get even sticker. All the while his faithful family backs
him in his endeavor and never balks at the sacrifices that they
must make in support of the rocket project.
Movie references refer to the genre of this film as “comedy.”
I missed the joke. If there were a genre entitled “implausible
situations,” this film would fit the category. In spite of
fine acting and squeaky clean dialogue, the rocket misses the target
as an enjoyable family film.
Additional credits: Bruce Dern plays Farmer’s elderly father-in-law,
Hal. Bruce Willis makes a brief appearance. The film was directed
by Michael Polish, who has had better plot material to craft into
a movie
by Mary Morgan is a member of
the St. Louis Gateway Film Critics Association. |
