Review: It’s official. Forget
the calendar. The summer blockbuster season is in full swing. With
the arrival of the Marvel Comics mutant/super heroes, the games have
officially begun. Director Brett Ratner pulls out all the stops as
your old favorite mutants, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Storm (Halle
Berry), Magneto (Ian McKellen), Phoenix (Famke Janssen) meet some
new allies, such as Angel (Ben Foster) and some new enemies, like
the giant Juggernaut (Vinnie Jones).
And what’s causing all of the action in this episode? A cure
for the mutant condition that defines the X-Men (and women) has
been discovered and the prevailing powers want to vaccinate the
“afflicted.” Not seeing themselves as ill, the mutants
resist being rendered powerless. A struggle ensues, and the rift
between Dr. Xavier and Magneto grows larger with each having their
own mutant soldiers. The battles are delightfully choreographed
fantasy. Relax, buy a large, buttered popcorn and visit Comic Book
Land!
