Review: While patrolling a highway
in California, Officer Edward Malus (Nicholas Cage) witnesses a horrible
accident in which a little girl and her mother are killed. Haunted
by the memory, he is unable to immediately return to his regular duties.
Desperately trying to cope with his anxiety, he travels to a remote
island in Puget Sound, Summersisle, at the request of his former fiancée.
Her daughter is missing and she begs for his help in finding her.
Once there, Edward soon realizes that things are very different there
than on the mainland.
A remake of a 1973 movie, this rendition of the now classic tale
is a bit flat. The characters are two-dimensional and the scenes
that are meant to shock are sometimes punctuated with chuckles,
rather than gasps, from the audience. Renting the original on DVD
might be an interesting follow-up to your trip to the theater. I
believe you will find it more thrilling than this modern version.
