Review: The shocking death of
Princess Diana, and the reaction of the Royal Family, is the focus
of this docu-drama chronicling the events following the tragedy itself.
Picturing a nation in mourning, the film switches back and forth between
the House of Windsor and the common people. The divide between the
two appears wide enough to threaten the very institution of the monarchy.
Enter newly elected Labor Party Prime Minister, Tony Blair (Michael
Sheen), and his understanding of his country’s reaction to the
death of “The Peoples Princess.” It is P.M. Blair who
painstakingly convinces Queen Elizabeth II (Helen Mirren) that her
subjects need her comfort in this troubling time.
Directed by Stephen Frears, this interpretation of a historical event
is especially delicate since most of the principles are still living.
Brilliantly, he peppers his dramatizations with news clips, lending
veracity to his take on the events surrounding the 1997 death of “Princess
Di.”
Note: At the Venice Film Festival, Helen Mirren was
given a 5 minute standing ovation for her role as Queen Elizabeth
II. Do you think Oscar® might have been in that audience?
