Review: A magical tale of war
and romance that is as visually stunning as any museum piece. In the
artistic vein of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” acclaimed
director Chen Kaige (“Farewell My Concubine”) manages
to vividly paint his fairytale story of love and war on the big screen.
And quite a story it is! One woman, magically influenced by a goddess,
is the object of affection of three very different men, a brave general,
a ruthless war lord and an enchanted slave. The clash of motives,
mistaken identities and unrequited love, produce magical, interesting
consequences. Listen for “the promise.” Melodramatic,
but very satisfying.
