Review: When two opposing magicians
dedicate themselves to the same illusion, the rivalry is unbearable.
Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman) is the more polished, and the most bitter,
of the two rivals. Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) lacks the professional
flair of his contemporary, but seems to have the inside track on the
trick at hand. Mr. Cutter (Michael Caine), mentor to Robert, is a
constant reminder of the mechanics of the profession. And Nikolai
Tesla (David Bowie), the father of electricity, is there to bridge
the gap between magic and reality.
As in any magic performance, the audience of this film must watch
and listen very carefully. The movie is the trick, and the “tells”
are there for the astute viewer. Director Christopher Nolan deftly
leads us through this exciting and intricate drama.
See if you walk away knowing the terms for the three basic stages
of a magic trick. It’s trivia at its best.
Warning: Don't let anyone spoil this one for you. It’s magic!
