Review: Suppose for a moment that
someone began narrating your life with a play-by-play account of your
every thought and move. Add to the drama the fact that you are the
only one who can hear the voice, and you create unabashed panic. Such
is the state of Harold Crick, respected, thorough IRS agent, as the
voice begins one morning as he is calculatingly brushing his teeth.
A careful, rational man, with precise habits, Harold struggles to
make sense of this bizarre occurrence.
Across town a famous novelist, Kay Eiffel (Emma Thompson) struggles
to complete her latest novel, while battling with the slings and
arrows of writer’s block.
Assisted by the take-charge publisher’s representative, Penny
Esher (Queen Latifah), things are not going well and the anticipated
story is in a stall mode.
And even further across town sits the man who can make the connection
between both problems, Professor Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman), acclaimed
literary expert. It seems only he has the expertise to bring the
threads together and weave them into a plausible plot.
A very clever, well-acted and well-presented film that straddles
the comedy-drama line, this movie will surprise and satisfy most
viewers.
