Review: The death of his father
lands young, twenty-something Stephane Miroux (Gael Garcia Bernal,
“Y Tu Mama Tambien”) back to live in his mother’s
flat in Paris. An artist, he lands a very drab job as a calendar designer
which forces his fertile, creative mind to seek other outlets. Soon
Stephane’s dream world is alive with fantastically rich sets,
made of cardboard, paint and cellophane props.
Director Michael Gondry creates a whimsical world in which Stephane
is the star of his own dream TV show about his life. Dreams and reality
sometimes collide as Stephane falls for his neighbor, the lovely Stephanie
(Charlotte Gainsbourg), who eventually crosses the hall and into his
private dream world.
Not for everyone, and, admittedly, a bit on the “artsy”
side, I found Stephanes’ fantasy life delightful.
