Review: Augusten Burroughs (Joseph
Cross) shares his most bizarre and unlikely upbringing with us, and
he pulls no punches. Perhaps his success as an author is predicated
on his past, but it looks like a very high price to pay for fame.
Join young Augusten as his psychotic mom, Deirdre (Annette Benning),
and alcoholic father, Norman (Alec Baldwin); put him on the back
burner as they battle through their struggling marriage. And when
it fails, Deirdre shuffles her son off to live with her psychiatrist,
Dr. Finch (Brian Cox) and his very dysfunctional family of assorted
screwballs.
Based upon the best selling novel by the same name, this film
will leave you wondering if it can possibly be true. But, even if
it is an embellishment of reality, most will concede that it’s
a writer’s prerogative to add a little color for the sake
of the craft, even if it’s a bit over-the-top.
In an impressively talented performance, this role may mean an
Award ® nomination for Annette Benning, who does a noteworthy
job as a woman severely handicapped by her own demons.
