Review: If you're not into sophomoric,
sight gags, then this tale of a simple Mexican friar, Ignacio (Jack
Black), turned wrestler is “nacho movie.” So silly is
the airy plot that, at times, the actors seem to be laughing at themselves.
It has to be difficult to keep a straight face when a scene involves
smearing your compadre’s face with cow dung.
Director Jared Hess did an honorable job with his low budget, quirky
“Napoleon Dynamite,” but fails to make the comedic leap
into the mainstream. A bright spot is the beautiful sister Encarnacion,
played by Ana de la Reguera who plays it pretty straight in spite
of the antics of Black. Limited in its appeal, most laughter emanated
from young males in the audience.
