Review: Director Steve Buscemi
tells the drab, painfully slow-moving saga of Jim (Casey Affleck),
a twenty-seven year old failure who returns home to his dysfunctional,
Mid-Western family when he gives up on his dream of lining in New
York City. A film shot in a grainy, home video format, this boring
tale manages to unravel before us without any regard for our discomfort
with its tedium. “Lonesome Jim” could easily be re-titled
“Depressing Jim” or "Morose Jim." On the positive
side, Casey Affleck does a great job of keeping the dreadfully slow
cadence required by the film.
Even the introduction of love interest, Anika (Liv Tyler), cannot
lift the dark cloud that shades the theater. Patience with the morose
Jim gets thin as he repeatedly mopes through life in small-town
Indiana. There were no snippets of conversation as the audience
exited the screening, only sighs of relief.
