Review: The violent demise of
George Reeves (Ben Affleck), AKA Superman, leaves his many fans and
all of Hollywood in a state of shock on June 16, 1959. A gunshot and
a lot of unanswered questions are all that are left behind. Is it
a case of suicide, or murder most foul? Few clues are left behind.
Enter private detective Louis Simo (Adrian Brody) who is hired by
George’s mother, Helen Bessolo (Lois Smith), to get to the bottom
of George’s death.
The cast of suspects is short, but not as short as the evidence. Detective
Simo keeps the case hot as he ekes out bits of newsworthy material
to the Hollywood press. As the George Reeves’ story unravels,
so does the secret of his long term, illicit affair with Toni Mannix,
wife of studio boss Eddie Mannix, as well as his growing discontent
with being typecast as a super hero.
Fine casting and acting, but a little lacking in plot, this true-crime
portrayal will appeal most to those who perked their ears at the
familiar T.V. intro of, “Look. Up in the air! It’s a
bird, a plane. It’s Superman!”
