Review: A story of triumph over
adversity as probation officer Sean Porter (Dwayne ‘The Rock’
Johnson) convinces his superiors at a juvenile detention facility
to take a chance and allow him to organize a football team of unruly
inmates. His able assistant, Malcolm Moore (Xzibit), adds his expertise
to the mix and the dream becomes reality. Based on a true story, this
uplifting story will have you rooting for the home team on several
levels, even if they are outcasts of society. The film tells a good
story, without sugar coating the obvious, and sometimes offensive,
impediments to such a project.
A feel-good tale of rebuilding the lives of young men who had little
to bring to the team in the way of discipline and self-respect is
what director Phil Joanou offers his audience. And ‘The Rock’
does a convincing job of coaching what seems to be an un-coachable
group of players. Don’t exit the theater too quickly because
the trailing credits include photos of the actual coach and his team,
adding an extra dose of reality to the story.
