Review: The year is 1917 and although
WWI is raging in Europe, President Wilson has not yet declared war
on Germany and her allies. A brave group of young Americans decide
to join forces with France and help defend Europe against the onset
of the “Huns.” Some joined as infantrymen, some as medics
and some as aviators. Willing to learn to fly the early biplane aircraft
and risking their lives high above the ground were the 38 Americans
who became known as the Lafayette Escadrille. Their dedication to
the cause, bravery and flying expertise are legendary.
As a means of telling their tale, director Tony Bill focuses on a
squad of six young flyers, among them a rancher, Blaine Rawlings (James
Franco), an expatriate pugilist, Eugene Skinner (Abdul Salis) and
a rich-boy out to made his father proud, William Jensen (Philip Winchester).
It is though the eyes of these young flyers that we are presented
a clip of early WWI combat complete with very realistic footage of
the famous aerial dogfights.
