Review: An excellent screen adaptation
of a popular teen novel, this fantasy/ action/ adventure film is an
outstanding example of a quality family film. Realistic to the point
of tears, but uplifting, the story moves along at a comfortable pace,
completely engaging its audience. All the characters are well-developed
and believable, no stiff stereotypes here.
A new girl at school, Leslie (AnnaSophia Robb), has the usual
problems of adjusting to her new environs and classmates. A neighbor
boy, Jesse (Josh Hutcherson), with problems of his own, befriends
her and a strong bond develops between the two. The two pals, both
with creative imaginations dream up a fantasy world and look forward
each day to playing in the nearby, perhaps enchanted, woods. There
they find fun and adventure in their made-up world of Terabithia
and enjoy all of its creatures. If you keep your mind “wide
open,” perhaps you'll see the giants, trolls and magical fighting
squirrels of this very special land, rich in beauty and excitement.
Directed by Gabor Csupo, this beautiful story will be enjoyed
by adults as well as children. Be advised of some scenes of profound
sadness.
