Review: Way out-of-touch U.S.
President Staton (Dennis Quaid) is enlisted to be a judge in a popular
television singing talent contest, not unlike “American Idol.”
Things are tense as the season finale approaches, and a winner is
about to emerge from the ranks. Can President Staton step up to the
task and help pick a winner?
Hugh Grant is Martin Tweed, the sharp tongued, cynical host of
the show. The plot takes a bit of a turn when it is revealed that
one of the top two contestants, Sally Kendoo (Mandy Moore) or Omer
(Sam Golazari) may be hiding a nefarious secret. Oh, no!
Director Paul Weitz of “American Pie” fame tries his
hand in this spoof on politics, politicians and T.V. talent contests,
but comes up short on the humor. Perhaps it was just too big of
a “slice” for him to tackle this time around.
